MANA includes three residual herbicides in 2013 Roundup Ready PLUS program

MANA Crop Protection announced that three residual herbicides in its cotton portfolio – Cotoran®, Cotton Pro® and Direx® 4L – will be included for grower incentives in the 2013 Roundup Ready PLUS™ Weed Management Solutions program.

All three MANA herbicides are recommended under the Roundup Ready PLUS program to combat Palmer amaranth (pigweed) and other weed species known for resistance to glyphosate. In 2013, Delta and Southeast cotton growers using one or more of these MANA residual herbicides will receive a $12 per gallon incentive when used according to Roundup Ready PLUS guidelines.

"With a savings of $12 per gallon, or $3 per acre per application at the recommended use rate, growers who rely on Cotoran, Cotton Pro or Direx 4L this season can expect even more of a return on their herbicide investment from this decision,” said Dave Downing, product manager with MANA Crop Protection.

The Monsanto Roundup Ready PLUS platform serves as a crop protection resource to help growers stay informed while receiving recommendations about best practices to manage glyphosate-resistant weeds. The program also provides support with proactive planning and aids growers in reducing their annual costs in the war on weeds.

In-field recommendations

Cotton growers operating on a glyphosate-based weed management system are encouraged to use pre-plant, pre-emergence, early post-emergence, late post-emergence and directed residual herbicides in their 2013 program.

"The advantage of using residual herbicides is not only for obtaining successful control of Palmer amaranth, but also for preventing early weed competition and delaying resistance development in other weed species,” said Downing. “Along with the use of residual herbicides, growers should consider alternating modes of action throughout the season to stay ahead of resistance build-up, regardless of when weeds may appear.”

With glyphosate resistance a constant threat for placing millions of dollars at risk in lost yields each year, Downing said Cotoran, Cotton Pro and Direx 4L provide the diversity in varying modes of action to improve season-long resistance management performance.

Cotoran

Applied pre-emergence or post-emergence, Cotoran provides economical control of both annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, especially Palmer amaranth and other weeds that show resistance to glyphosate. Cotoran offers up to two and a half weeks of residual activity and can easily be tank mixed with other products to broaden its scope of control.

Cotton Pro

Effective in controlling glyphosate-resistant weed species and annual grasses, Cotton Pro provides up to three weeks of residual control. Applied as a pre-plant, pre-plant incorporated, pre-emergence or post-directed application on cotton 3-inches tall to layby, it delivers superior morningglory control when used with glyphosate. When applied post-directed, a tank mix with MSMA enhances activity and control.

Direx 4L

As the preferred diuron product in the Roundup Ready PLUS program, Direx 4L is a proven performer in controlling glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth and marestail (horseweed). Applied as a pre-plant, pre-emergence or post-directed application from 6-inch cotton to layby, Direx 4L provides up to three and a half weeks of residual control.

Economics that support change

In some cases, use of residual herbicides may lead to increased herbicide costs. But in most cases, residual herbicides can make all the difference in whether or not the crop is grown successfully.

"In fields infested with glyphosate-resistant pigweed, a cotton crop can’t be successfully grown or harvested without the use of residual herbicides,” added Downing. “Some of the best solutions available are not new at all, but rather trusted, time-tested chemistries.
