Over 120 tonnes of grapefruit coming from Turkey had to be destroyed as they had pesticide residue level above safety limits. None of the fruits ended up in shops and markets, but the incident raises questions over controls on the Turkish side.
The Romanian authorities have found quantities above the safe amount of a fungicide called Imazalil in the fruits. Imazalil is used to prevent and treat fungal infections of crops.
Romanian authorities will increase checkups on all products coming from Turkey, not only vegetables and fruits, but meat as well, in order to protect all European consumers, according to Romania’s Agriculture Ministry.
