By this time next year, Syngenta plans to open a $63 million expansion of its corn production facility in the village of Phillips, Neb., just east of Grand Island.

Construction by Darland Construction began this summer and is expected to be finished by the 2013 harvest.

Syngenta is a multinational agricultural technology company based in Basel, Switzerland, that was formed in 2000 when Novartis Agribusiness and Zeneca Agrochemicals merged.

The Phillips expansion will add nearly 50 new seasonal, part-time and full-time jobs to the 287-population village, augmenting the area’s existing Syngenta plant, which employs 28 full-time workers and 50 to 200 part-time workers.

Christian Evans, executive director of Aurora Area Chamber and Development Corp., said Hamilton County as a whole will benefit financially.

The new jobs might largely attract commuters, Evans said, noting that about as many people commute out of the county as commute into it from larger neighboring cities, such as Grand Island and York.

Phillips plant manager Bill Hunter said the expansion was a way of making sure that Syngenta is “a big part of the community long-term.”

The new facility will expand on the area’s ability to produce corn by about 5,500 acres. Hunter said additional seed corn acres will be contracted with central Nebraska farmer-growers.

The 42-acre expansion includes new technology, such as a new green corn receiving facility, dryer and conditioning tower as well as more bulk seed storage and warehousing, Hunter said.

The current plant harvests corn for distribution in the western half of the United States, Mexico and parts of Canada.

The company, which has employees in 90 countries, has a chemical formulating and packaging facility in Omaha with 50 employees. Syngenta also has a fertilizer plant in Waterloo.
