The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has approved Monsanto's application to carry out small-scale tests of genetically modified insect-resistant and/or glyphosate-tolerant Pima/extra long staple cotton. The company plans to test three Gossypium barbadense cotton lines at up to 13 sites of no more than 2 ha each between 2007 and 2009. The OGTR had previously concluded that the tests posed negligible risks to human health or the environment. The cotton expresses Monsanto's Bollgard II and Roundup Ready Flex traits, which have already been approved in G hirsutum cotton.
