Brazilian agrochemical imports rose by 42.4% to 119.8 tonnes in the first seven months of 2008 compared with the same period last year, according to the Brazilian agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindag. The rise was largely due to the booming trade for the herbicide, glyphosate, triazine herbicides, the fungicides, carbendazim and pyraclostrobin, as well as triazole fungicides, Sindag information manager Ivan Amancio Sampaio says. Such products are used on a large scale on soybeans, maize, wheat and sugar cane, he adds. Imports were also sharply up in the first half of 2007.
Herbicides accounted for more than two-thirds of the trade as imports of the class rose by more than 50%. Imports of insecticides inched up to just over 21 tonnes, while fungicides rose by more than three quarters.
