Dow AgroSciences’ Entrust SC insecticide (active ingredient: spinosad), which is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic production, has received federal registration from EPA.

Entrust SC is an enhancement of Entrust insect control, a longtime solution in organic production that was a wettable powder formulation. The enhanced product is said to provide the performance organic growers have come to trust, but now in a liquid suspension concentrate (SC) formulation that allows for easier measuring and mixing.

"Dow AgroSciences is confident that Entrust SC will satisfy the needs of organic growers,” says Brian Timmerman, insecticide portfolio marketing leader for Dow AgroSciences. "This product will provide growers with the efficacy they trust in the formulation they want.”

Entrust SC insecticide is produced through the fermentation of a naturally occurring soil bacterium. Spinosad, the active ingredient in Entrust SC, is the only Group 5 insecticide listed by OMRI for use in organic production that offers control of thrips, worms, and leafminers. The enhanced product also has demonstrated excellent efficacy against spotted wing drosophila compared with other organic insecticides in recent research trials.

This insect control product is labeled for the control of insects in more than 200 crops, including alfalfa, berries, citrus, cole crops, cucurbits, field corn, fruiting vegetables, grass pastures, leafy vegetables, ornamentals, pome fruits, stone fruits, sweet corn, and strawberries.

"Entrust SC provides effective control of targeted pests like thrips, worms, and leafminers in a wide range of organically grown crops,” Timmerman says. “It does so without adversely affecting most non-target organisms or disrupting populations of most beneficial insects.”

Spinosad received the 1999 Green Chemistry Challenge Award presented by EPA. The award recognizes products that reduce negative impacts on human health and the environment.
