Dow AgroSciences'new encapsulated nitrogen stabilizer, designed for use with urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and manure applications, has a name: Instinct. Instinct will stabilize nitrogen in the soil, making it less susceptible to loss due to denitrification and leaching, says the company, which intends to offer Instinct to growers as an environmentally responsible tool for growing healthy corn.
Instinct will remain stable on the soil surface for up to 10 days, which allows growers flexibility in scheduling spring applications with UAN and foundation herbicides. According to Dow AgroSciences, Instinct will be tank-mix-compatible with herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers to fit existing application practices and equipment; save trips across the field and help lower fuel usage costs; and may be incorporated either mechanically or with a minimum of 1/2 inch of rain or irrigation.
Currently under review by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the product holds a 24 (c) registration in Iowa. Federal registration in the US is expected in 2009.
