EU grants biocidal approvals for three ais

The European Commission has granted biocidal approvals for three active ingredients. Those ais will be added in Annex I of the biocidal products Directive 98/8/EC on May 1st 2014, in order to permit member states and interested parties to prepare themselves to meet the new requirements entailed and to ensure that applicants who have prepared dossiers can benefit fully from the 10-year period of data protection. Methyl nonyl ketone is approved for used as repellent, margosa extract as insecticide/acaricide, while hydrochloric acid as private area and public health area disinfectant.

Member states have to assess other uses or exposure scenarios and risks to human populations and to environmental compartments that have not been representatively addressed by EU when granting authorisations. Member states also were required to ensure authorisations for margosa extract are subject to appropriate risk mitigation measures to protect surface water, sediment and non-target arthropods. In view of the corrosivity of hydrochloric acid as well as the possible measures identified to mitigate the related risk, it is appropriate to require that exposure during non-professional use is minimised through the design of the packaging, unless it can be demonstrated in the application for product authorisation that risks for human health can be reduced to acceptable levels by other means.
