Two imidazolinone herbicide active ingredients (ais), imazapic and imazethapyr, were granted registrations by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). Both products are originally manufactured by Chinese agrochemical company Yancheng South Chemical Co., Ltd.
The imidazolinone herbicides, developed by American Cyanamid, can be used against various annual and perennial broadleaf and grass weeds on soybeans, peanuts and vegetables.
The imidazolines act by inhibiting branched chain amino acid (valine, isoleucine, leucine) biosynthesis, specifically, they inhibit the catalytic action of acetolactate synthase (ALS), also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAs). The herbicides can be readily absorbed by foliages, stems and/or roots and translocated in the xylem and phloem. They readily move to the plant meristem where they exert their toxic action, growth stopping fairly quickly.
The imidazolines members also include imazaquin, imazamox, imazapyr and imazamethabenz; herbicides in this family have exhibited physical incompatibility with 2,4-D and MCPA when tank-mixed.
