The French government says despite a ruling by the nation’s highest court, they will continue to ban the cultivation of Monsanto’s MON810 variety of maize. MON810 is a genetically modified Bt corn. It was approved for use in the European Union in 1998 but France banned its use in 2008 saying it posed a risk to the environment.
Monsanto filed suit with the European Court of Justice which found the ban was invalid because the French had based their decision on the wrong EU legislation. The French Council of State then ruled the ban was not scientifically justified. But last Friday the French Environment and Agriculture Ministers issued statements saying they will uphold the ban.
