Bayer CropScience is to improve its pesticide production facilities in Brazil. The company will invest €18 million ($28 million) to fund updated technology and infrastructure developments by the end of 2009 at its Belford Roxo facility, Rio de Janeiro. It is Bayer’s only agrochemical production plant in Brazil and produces 150,000 tonnes of pesticide products a year.
The Bayer investment totals €40 million ($63 million) for the company’s pesticide and material science divisions at the site. Partner companies will invest €55 million ($86 million) at the plant in crop protection and material science facilities. The arrival of new partners will create 800 jobs to add the 2,000 already at the site, Bayer says.
The company has concentrated its pesticide production in Brazil at Belford Roxo since the middle of 2006. It has served as a prototype for Bayer’s model of a distribution hub in other national markets. The improvements are to celebrate 50 years of operations at its Belford Roxo site, Bayer says.
