Syngenta Now Accepting 2010 Resistance Fighter of the Year Nominations

Glyphosate resistance is becoming more than a threat for many growers across the United States; it is becoming a reality.  The Syngenta Resistance Fighter™ of the Year program recognizes individuals who are tackling this reality head on through research and educational efforts that provide growers with the solutions they need to combat weed resistance in the field.
 
"Our 2009 winners demonstrate a passion for the preservation of glyphosate and the future of agriculture. They devote extensive time and effort toward their work and are helping many growers successfully manage glyphosate resistance,” said Chuck Foresman, manager of weed resistance strategies, Syngenta Crop Protection. “We know there are more individuals across the country with similar passion and devotion that are deserving of this recognition, which is why we are continuing our Resistance Fighter of the Year program.”
 
The Resistance Fighter of the Year from the north, Paul Barchenger, agronomy division manager at Hutchinson Coop in Hutchinson, Minn., continues to make recommendations that earned him award in 2009 as he counsels growers this season. 
 
"Giant ragweed has been our most prevalent weed problem since 2004,” he said. His recommendation of effective solutions, backed by extensive research, help growers in his area fight this weed effectively. “Combinations of Syngenta pre-emergence herbicides like Boundary® and post-emergence herbicides such as Flexstar® GT have shown tremendous success in combating giant ragweed.”
 
2009 Resistance Fighter of the Year from the south, Jeremy Kichler, Georgia Cooperative Extension agent in Macon County, Ga., continues to stress the use of proactive management techniques, a critical component of any successful weed management program, while counseling growers.
 
"Residual herbicides like Prefix® on soybean and Reflex® on cotton have been excellent for Palmer pigweed control this season,” Kichler said. “Growers should use multiple modes of action, apply correct herbicide rates and be timely with their herbicide applications.”

2010 Resistance Fighter of the Year nominations are being accepted now through November 19, 2010, at www.resistancefighteroftheyear.com. Eligible nominees include retailers, consultants and extension agents who have successfully implemented resistance management practices with producers in their area.
