Jiangsu Institute of Ecomones: taking chances for sustainable growth

Jiangsu Institute of Ecomones Co., Ltd (JIE) is a leading sulfonyurea(SU) herbicides in China. Mr. Kong Fanlei, President of JIE, shared with Agropages his insight of the SU herbicides industry. Though the rapid adoption of GMO crops is impacting traditional agrochemical industry considerably, Mr. Kong believed that chemical pesticides such as SU products are having a promising prospect for their efficiency and safeness.

JIE dominated its role in China by its various kinds of SU products and R&D abilities from intermediates, technicals to formulations, as well as standard-setting in this field. As more and more concerns on health and environmental problems, JIE has reduced its product line from over 50 to 35, which including bensulfuron, metsulfuron, chlorsulfuron, thifensulfuron, tribenuron, ethametsulfuron-methyl, nicosulfuron, triasulfuron, chlorimuron, rimsulfuron etc.

Market viewpoint

With its varieties of more than 30 species and versatile applications on field crop, economic crop, lawn and firebreak forest, the SU herbicides markets varied significantly in its planting type and crop species. Furthermore,  complicities in applying have made the products more easily being introduced to the markets with high-level agrotechnical. However, Mr. Kong regards the emerging markets such as China, India and Latin America as the most potential markets for SU products. Thus JIE introduces its paddy products of bensulfuon and metsulfuron in China, Southeast Asia and other rice-growing regions while exports its rimsulfuron and nicosulfuron products to Latin America. Mr. Kong told Agropages that JIE is to gain approvals for six products in next five years and expand the EU, America and Australasia markets.

Product development

Resistance in weeds has made many of the herbicides like glyphosate being losing its effectiveness, thus bring the SU herbicides much opportunities as their distinct mode of action. It is forecasted that the SU herbicides market will grow at rate of 2% for the next several years. More and more companies are exerting themselves in R&D on new molecules, formulations and crops uses of the products and achieved significant success, for example, the mesosulfuron-methyl from Bayer CropScience has reached a revenue of $ 295 million in 2008. Too, JIE acknowledges that weeds will always develop resistance to the herbicides used to control them and devoted much on combination formulations of paddy herbicides such as bensulfuron +acetochlor, bensulfuron+acetochlor+metsulfuron, bensulfuron +quinclorac, bensulfuron+mefenacet, bensulfuron+bispyribac sodium and bensulfuron+metsulfuron.

Outlook

The promotion by the government and expanding capacity of the pesticide industry has turned China from a pesticide importer to an exporter, and then a competent supplier. JIE is to express its concept of sustainable growth by maintaining its leading role in domestic and exploring overseas markets while actively engage in R&D on new products.
