In a strategic move to advance sustainable agriculture and biological innovation, Futureco Bioscience, a Spanish biotechnology manufacturer specializing in environmentally responsible crop protection and biostimulation, has signed a global evaluation with licensing option agreement with Sumitomo Corporation, one of the world’s largest integrated trading companies. The agreement concerns a proprietary biological crop protection technology, developed and patented by Futureco Bioscience, which is currently undergoing registration in both Europe and the United States.
The agreement, signed by Rafael Juncosa, President & CEO of Futureco Bioscience and Marcos Mares, Director of the Global Business Development Office of the Agribusiness Strategic Business Unit at Sumitomo Corporation, sets the foundation for a future licensing deal for worldwide commercial exploitation.
At the core of this agreement is a novel biocontrol product, based on the proprietary strain B2017 of Pseudomonas alloputida. This biological solution has demonstrated consistent and robust efficacy in both internal studies and independently conducted field trials. It provides broad-spectrum control against key fungal and bacterial pathogens of agronomic importance, including Powdery mildew, Downy mildew, Botrytis spp., Pseudomonas syringae, and Xanthomonas spp. The product is protected under international patents and is advancing through regulatory processes in key agricultural markets.
This strategic agreement reinforces the ongoing collaboration between Futureco Bioscience and Sumitomo Corporation—shareholder of the Spanish biotech firm through its European subsidiary, SUMI AGRO EUROPE—and marks a significant milestone in Futureco Bioscience’s international expansion. By leveraging Sumitomo Corporation’s global infrastructure and direct access to key agricultural markets, Futureco Bioscience will reinforce its leadership in scientific innovation, product development, and the positioning of next-generation biological solutions worldwide. Through its Agribusiness Strategic Business Unit, Sumitomo Corporation is working to expand its presence in smart and sustainable agriculture. The collaboration with Futureco Bioscience, a key partner in the development of innovative biological solutions, reflects this strategic direction.
Rafael Juncosa, CEO and President of Futureco Bioscience, stated:
″Sumitomo Corporation has an inspiring history and exceptional global capacity in agriculture. This agreement marks a key milestone in our strategy to scale our products through trusted global partnerships. We are proud to be working together to bring this innovative solution closer to growers worldwide, offering effective and environmentally sound crop protection.″
Ivan Tapia, Global Business Development Manager for Biologicals at the Agribusiness Unit added:
″B2017 is a promising and innovative active ingredient, with exceptional performance over fungal diseases where efficacy of biologicals currently present in the marketplace is rather limited. We are very excited about the prospect of adding this biocontrol agent to our SEIPRO portfolio, our global umbrella brand for biosolutions. Futureco Bioscience brings deep technical expertise that, added to Sumi/Summit Agro’s global footprint and knowledge about go-to-market strategies, will strengthen our presence in the biologicals plant protection segment and clearly reinforce our shared vision of clean, efficient, and sustainable agriculture.″
