In recent years, the climate crisis has manifested through irregular water and temperature patterns, affecting soil fertility, crop quality, and putting agricultural production and food security in the country at risk.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, 63.8% of the agricultural land in the country relies exclusively on rainfall. The highlands are the most affected region, with 50.7% of its territory under rainfed conditions—meaning no access to irrigation systems and complete dependence on rainwater for crop production and livestock sustenance.

In this context, a team from Rivulis, experts in drip irrigation systems, met with Peru’s Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), Ángel Manuel Manero Campos, to promote the efficient use of resources in agriculture.

″Given the need for greater investment in modernizing and implementing micro-irrigation systems, along with high poverty rates and population vulnerability, Peru is expected to be one of the countries most affected by climate change, facing challenges such as increasing natural disasters, water scarcity, and impacts on food security,″ said Katherine Yong, Regional Marketing Manager for Rivulis West SACA.

During the meeting, discussions covered the challenges of water use in agriculture and the dissemination of irrigation techniques among farmers to optimize water resource utilization and increase production in complex areas.

″The proper use of water resources enhances the productivity and profitability of Peruvian farmers, boosting the sustainability and competitiveness of their crops,″ highlighted César Urbina, Commercial Manager of Rivulis Peru.

According to MIDAGRI, 70% of the food we consume comes from traditional agriculture. Therefore, it is crucial to drive its development through better practices, greater access to technology, and continuous support for farmers, ensuring the country’s food security.

″We aim to make Rivulis’ expertise and technology available to everyone. Very soon, we will announce new developments to benefit the country’s agriculture,″ concluded Yong.
