In the interview, Rajavelu emphasized that Godrej Agrovet's entry into the crop protection industry 25 years ago was a natural extension of its commitment to Indian farmers. Initially a plant growth regulator (PGR) company, Godrej Agrovet gradually expanded into herbicides, insecticides, and other crop protection solutions. Today, the company is a leader in the cotton herbicide market, with its flagship brand PYNA and product Combine (Homobrassinolide) used in over 70% of India's export-grade grape cultivation.

The success of Godrej Agrovet is built on a foundation of innovation, farmer-centric solutions, and strategic collaborations. This investment underscores the company's commitment to developing sustainable and effective crop protection solutions tailored to the needs of Indian farmers. Rajavelu stated, "Our goal is not just to provide products but to offer complete solutions from seed to harvest, helping farmers increase their yields and incomes."

Deep Insights into the Indian Agricultural Market: Challenges and Opportunities of Key Crops

India's agricultural landscape is diverse, with crops such as rice, maize, wheat, cotton, fruits, and vegetables playing a significant role in the country's economy. Godrej Agrovet adopts a crop-specific strategy, focusing on key agricultural states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. Rajavelu provided a detailed analysis of cotton and rice as examples, of the current state and future prospects of India's agricultural market.

1. Cotton: From Boom to Challenges

Cotton is one of India's most important crops, yet it faces significant challenges. Rajavelu noted that Bt cotton, once a revolutionary solution for pest resistance, is now under severe threat from the pink bollworm. Unpredictable weather patterns and water scarcity have further exacerbated the plight of cotton farmers. According to the Cotton Association of India (CAI), cotton production in the 2023-24 season is expected to reach a 15-year low, with yields plummeting nearly 30% from 572 kg per hectare in 2013-14 to approximately 396 kg per hectare, significantly below the global average of 675 kg.

To address these issues, Godrej Agrovet has introduced innovative solutions like PYNA, a cotton herbicide covering both pre-emergence and post-emergence stages of the crop Rajavelu emphasized the need for precision agriculture techniques, such as drip irrigation, to optimize water and fertilizer usage, which can significantly boost cotton yields. He stated, "We continue to combine technological innovation with farmer education to help cotton farmers overcome these challenges and revive India's cotton industry."
