Azerbaijan is located in the southeastern part of the Transcaucasus region, at the crossroads of the Eurasian continent, between 44° and 52° east longitude and 38° and 42° north latitude. It covers an area of 86,600 square kilometers and borders the Caspian Sea to the east, Iran and Turkey to the south, Russia to the north, and Georgia and Armenia to the west.
The country benefits from a unique geographical location, rich natural resources, and diverse climatic conditions. The Greater and Lesser Caucasus Mountains run from west to east, creating a varied topography and climate conducive to growing crops such as cotton, wheat, grapes, mulberries, and tobacco. The southern regions, with their warm climate, are also suitable for tea cultivation.
Agriculture is a significant pillar of Azerbaijan’s economy. In addition to traditional crops, nut trees such as olives, hazelnuts, and walnuts are also key products. Black caviar from the Caspian Sea sturgeon is one of the country’s most famous exports, alongside oil.
In 2023, Azerbaijan’s imports spanned various sectors, including electromechanical products, vehicle parts, food, and fertilizers. In line with its economic diversification efforts, the Azerbaijani government actively promotes foreign investment in agriculture, chemical processing, and other non-oil sectors.
Azerbaijan’s pesticide registration system is evolving, with pesticide management playing an increasingly important role in the sustainable development of agriculture. As of December 3, 2024, the country has approved 2,269 pesticide registration certificates, involving 173 companies. Of these, 2,238 are conventional chemical pesticides (98.63%), while 31 are biological pesticides (1.37%).
