‘The Belgian onion grower is our joint priority’

Hazera and Beaucarne are collaborating exclusively in Belgium to cultivate seed onions. The goal is to jointly supply Belgian growers with quality seeds, new varieties, and expert services year-round.

″The importance of the Belgian grower is the starting point of this collaboration,″ emphasized André Boot, Senior Onion Specialist at Hazera. ″And in order to serve that grower as well as possible, an in-depth knowledge of the Belgian bilingual market, soil, and the grower himself is necessary. Beaucarne has this expertise in-house.″

Stephan Beaucarne, director of Beaucarne B.V., is, in turn, pleased with Hazera’s broad onion expertise. ″They are a global player in both product quality and product development. Thanks to this collaboration with Hazera, Beaucarne can offer a complete package to growers in Belgium.″

Onion quality is the basis

Thomas Foulon, the onion specialist at Beaucarne, is enthusiastic about the onion quality that he can offer the grower with this collaboration. ″Provided you have the right varieties, our region is extremely suitable for growing onions, also for export. Hazera’s seed onions, such as Centro and Dormo, perform excellently in terms of quality characteristics such as hardness, color, and low weight loss.″ André expected the collaboration to also help in the further development and improvement of onion varieties specifically suitable for the Belgian market. ″The input that we receive directly from the market via Beaucarne helps us to continue to improve the products.″

Future-oriented collaboration

″With Beaucarne as a direct partner in Belgium, we can also offer the Belgian grower direct access to all varieties,″ Andre said. ″In addition, Beaucarne’s market knowledge helps us to focus our breeding increasingly on the Belgian market, both in the short and long term.″ Stephan also saw a match in the progressiveness of both companies that offers the grower important advantages. ″Where Hazera is a leader in product development, Beaucarne is a leader in cultivation support, new cultivation techniques such as Ecorobotix, and knowledge about drip irrigation. From seed to fertilization and from crop protection to harvest. With us, you will find everything under one roof.″

Win-win-win

″In addition, Beaucarne’s extensive network ensures that Hazera onions are becoming increasingly well-known in Belgium,″ André continued. ″Onions that mainly go to Dutch processors. If they have good experiences with Belgian onions, then we have a win-win-win situation!″ Both Stephan and André see the collaboration as not only valuable but also pleasant. Stephan: ″Warm family values, delivering quality, and putting the grower first. That’s where we fit together.″
