Sumitomo Chemical subsidiary Valent USA Corporation’s professional products unit is to introduce the new insecticide, Overture (pyridalyl), for use on glasshouse-grown vegetables and ornamentals. The active ingredient received its first US approval last month. The EPA had scheduled decisions for use of the ai on vegetables, ornamentals and cotton. Approval decisions for use on cotton, tobacco and outdoor vegetables have been rescheduled for the first quarter of fiscal 2009.
Overture provides fast and effective residual control of western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), while also controlling larvae of lepidopteran pests in ornamentals, Valent points out. It has “no significant impact” on most beneficial insects, including ladybirds, lacewings and predatory bugs, the company adds.
Sumitomo introduced pyridalyl, as Pleo, in Japan for use on vegetables in 2004. It has since been approved in India and China, while applications have been made in several European countries.
