The intended grant of registration for the seed treatment suspension cyclobutrifluram 200g/L filed by Syngenta Crop Protection Co., Ltd of Switzerland was announced recently in ICAMA’s 8th batch of pesticides for grant of registration in 2024 in China.

Cyclobutrifluram is used to control wheat stem rot, which will be the first time registration for the fungicide in China for controlling wheat stem rot.

Wheat stem rot is presently a significant wheat disease, whilst cyclobutrifluram controls fusarium-originated wheat stem rot and rice bakanae disease. Should cyclobutrifluram be granted registration smoothly as expected for control of wheat stem rot, it will not only further expand the registration of this active ingredient in China but will also provide more options for applications to wheat and control of fungal diseases.

Cyclobutrifluram is a new generation SDHI fungicide launched by Syngenta after ten years of development, which is the company’s 5th SDHI fungicide/nematicide launched following Sedaxane, Isopyrazam, Benzovindiflupyr, Pydiflumetofen, being another fungicide/nematicide after Bayer’s Fluopyram, as well as the second nicotinamide- structured (or picolinamide structure) compound after BASF’s Boscalid. It is another SDHI fungicide that is highly effective in preventing and controlling Fusarium after Syngenta’s Pydiflumetofen.

Currently, cyclobutrifluram is still patented, while Syngenta has filed for a patent for a cyclobutrifluram-based compound, which is already authorized in China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, the United States and Europe. Its Chinese patent was filed on March 6, 2013, expiring on March 5, 2033. Title of invention: N-cyclic amide, as a nematicide.

According to China Pesticide Information Network, so far, there are two valid cyclobutrifluram product registrations in China, including one technical concentrate and one single agent.
