The 8th China Pesticide Exporting Workshop (2024 CPEW) was held in Hangzhou, China, on July 18 and 19, 2024.
During the two-day meeting, 25 speakers at home and abroad steered in-depth discussions on 23 hot topics.
AgroPages is presenting a series of report on the seven key topics addressed at the workshop.
Topic 3: China’s Green Biological Program promoting the establishment of a complete crop protection system
Ju Yuhong,Formulation CTO of Crop Protection Division, Qilu Pharmaceutical, delivered a theme report - Development of Biochemical Pesticides: Probe into Biosynthesis Route, Industrialization Process and Future Trend. The report includes a presentation to the advantages of biopesticides, a full display of the crop biological protection, global cooperation in biopesticide development and the strategic goals of sustainable development of Qilu Pharmaceutical, focusing on Huaxing’s spinosad product design and grain storage-oriented application scenarios.

Chen Tingzhuo, Director of Biopesticide Creation Center, Chengdu Newsun Crop Science, spoke of developing the company’s integrated biological agricultural solutions based on natural products. He believed that although chemical pesticides still dominate the current Chinese pesticide market, the business scale of Chinese biopesticide market in 2022 could reach more than 10% of the overall pesticide market. With the continuous promotion and implementation of China’s high-quality agricultural green development strategy, the continuous advancement of biotechnology and the increased demand from consumers for high-quality green agricultural products, the Chinese biopesticide market is ushering in a new era for development.

In the future, the Chinese biopesticide industry will develop in the following four directions:
The first, biotechnology innovation will become a key driver in developing the biopesticide industry. The second, biopesticide products, will show the diversified trend of development to meet the needs of different markets and crops. The third, biological and chemical pesticides will co-develop in a coordinated manner to jointly build up a more complete crop protection system. Last, the Chinese biopesticide manufacturers will actively seek strategic cooperation with international agrochemical giants to explore the global market and jointly enhance international competitiveness.
The report also presented New Sun’s innovative ideas and classic application cases in biopesticides. Through its years of accumulation in the field of natural product development, New Sun has developed its function-based biological pesticides, biological plant growth regulators, 12-function biostimulants and several microbial pesticide products, which are in the process of industrialization. The combination of ″biopesticides + chemical pesticides″ will be the future trend of development of crop protection products in China and even in the world, because biopesticides can reduce the resistance to chemical pesticides, whilst combined use with chemical pesticides can improve the pesticidal efficacy and promote plant health.
Moreover, synthetic biology and gene editing technology will gradually reduce the production cost of biopesticides and resolve the contradiction between land use for planting grain and medicinal plants, thus coping with the current challenges in the application of biopesticides.
