The Brazilian National Association of Producers and Importers of Inoculants (ANPII) has launched the Interlaboratory Program for Biological Inoculants in partnership with Ideelab Biotechnology, a company developing scientific innovations for the agronomic sector.

The aim is to comply with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) regulations, which mandate that companies in the biological inoculant sector participate in a program that organizes, conducts, and evaluates analyses of identical products or materials in at least two different laboratories under predetermined conditions to ensure accurate product quality assessment.

According to ANPII, this initiative enhances the quality of biological inoculants available in the market, increasing efficiency across various crops. Based on Brazilian legislation requirements for biological inoculants, the program aims to objectively evaluate companies' analyses regarding the concentration, purity, and identity of microorganism strains in the submitted inoculants. The process includes chemical, physical, and biological studies to be conducted in MAPA-accredited laboratories.

These measures aim to ensure the quality of inoculants, preventing contamination that could harm crops and result in fines or product disposal. "The program's intent at ANPII is to evaluate the results from quality control laboratories," explained Larissa Simon, ANPII's Executive Advisor. Another goal is to train members on standardizing analysis methodologies, ensuring efficiency in the quality control processes of inoculant industries, she added.

Although the legislation requires this, there is still a need to expand the availability of specific interlaboratory programs for the quality control of biological inoculants to adequately meet the high sector demands. Thus, ANPII will allow members and non-members to participate in the Interlaboratory Program, which will certify the laboratories of biological inoculant companies with MAPA.

With coordination and structure independent of the companies, the program conducts cross-analyses among different laboratories. All participants analyze the same samples, and the results and deviations are used as discussion, evaluation, and improvement points for the analyses. Additionally, it involves statistical correlations, training, and discussions for the continuous improvement of the methods and analytical processes used by the industry.

Ideelab Biotechnology, a partner in the program, possesses a collection of microorganisms with strains from various species, including those most common in the biological market. The company is authorized to issue reports on colony-forming unit (CFU) counts in inoculants, as the legislation requires, for issuing certificates of participation in the interlaboratory program.
