BASF has introduced the fungicide Melyra (Mefentrifluconazole + Pyraclostrobin) to the Brazilian market, its latest release for disease management in citrus farming. The announcement was made during Expocitros 2024, an event organized by the Centro de Citricultura Sylvio Moreira in São Paulo, Brazil, with special coverage by AgroPages.

The active ingredient in Melyra is Revysol (Mefentrifluconazole), which BASF claims "stands out for its unique characteristics in the crop protection market."

"By incorporating Power Flex technology, Revysol offers resilience, potency, and flexibility, promoting selectivity and high efficacy in combating fungal pathogens across various crops," the multinational company states.

In crop protection, Melyra is one of the major launches from BASF's Research and Development (R&D) sector, which receives an annual investment of around 900 million euros. Melyra controls major diseases, serving as an important tool to boost productivity and quality in citrus farming. In addition to Revysol, which affects ergosterol biosynthesis and provides "systemic action with a translaminar effect," Melyra includes Pyraclostrobin in its formulation. Pyraclostrobin acts within the mitochondria by inhibiting complex III. Combined with good agricultural practices, this solution offers protective and curative action, working at different stages of the fungal pathogen's development with high selectivity.

Katty Corrente.jpeg"Brazil is one of the world's top three citrus producers, so the citrus industry must have access to the most advanced technologies to support market growth and the legacy of producers," says Katty Corrente, Marketing Leader for the Hortifruti, Sugarcane, and Coffee Production System at BASF. According to her, this Revysol-based launch will be an "effective tool to sustainably address the phytosanitary challenges of citrus farming."

Brazil is the world leader in orange production and orange juice export. The estimated harvest for the 2023/24 season is 307.22 million boxes of 40.8 kg of fruit, according to Fundecitrus (Citrus Defense Fund).
