Currently, 60% of UPL's revenue in Brazil comes from biological products, natural origin, and differentiated solutions, including the premium line, said Giuliano Scalabrin, business director in Brazil at Natural Plant Protection (NPP), the business unit of the group focused on the sustainability line.
The result aligns with UPL's planning, aiming to split its international revenue into 50% traditional chemical products and 50% "sustainable" products by 2027. In 2022, the global operation of the Indian-origin multinational generated over $6 billion in revenue from fertilizers and pesticides.
UPL's Brazilian portfolio includes 13 products from the "sustainable line," divided among nutrition, biostimulation, and solutions for pest and disease biocontrol.
According to Giuliano Scalabrin, the company's aims to launch more NPP products into the market, seeking management balance, with biologicals complementing and being associated with traditional ones.
He mentioned that three more products are scheduled for launch in 2024 to "increase nitrogen efficiency, one of the major points of attention for carbon balance."
"We don't want to work with synthetics. We entered this market thinking that we need to increasingly focus on plant health and
work on food production sustainably," said the director.
Scalabrini mentioned that bioinputs still have a greater presence in significant crops such as soybeans and corn, are they are being adopted more by large-scale farmers. Therefore, one of his goals as head of NPP is to bring these sustainable solutions to small-scale and even organic farmers. The multinational has intensified partnerships with Brazilian cooperatives and distributors to achieve this plan.
"This better soil nutrient use market through microorganisms will grow significantly. We are already working on phosphorus solubilization and better nitrogen use," the executive said in conclusion during a meeting with journalists at UPL's headquarters in the Brazilian city of Campinas, São Paulo state.
