FAO, World Vegetable Centre invest USD 650,000 to boost Tanzania’s food security

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has joined forces with the World Vegetable Centre to strengthen food security in Tanzania.

A substantial USD 650,000 (TZS 1.6 billion) investment underscores this commitment, earmarked to fortify the center’s initiatives in seed improvement.

Dr. Kent Nnadozie, FAO Secretary for International Agreements and Seed Genetics Conservation stressed the significance of promoting vegetable farming as a catalyst for economic growth across Africa.

Dr. Gabriel Rugalema, Regional Director for East and Southern Africa at the World Vegetable Centre, positioned the partnership within the context of a global treaty addressing nutrition and genetics issues worldwide.

Emphasizing shared goals of ensuring safe food, expanding agriculture for nutrition, and providing stable employment for youth, Rugalema expressed optimism about the future.

Anticipating 15,000 seed varieties by next year and targeting 40,000 by 2030, he underscored the vital role of seed processing, collection, and preservation in advancing vegetable farming for economic growth.

″This collaboration marks a significant stride in ensuring food security, promoting sustainable agriculture, and fostering economic development in Tanzania and the broader African continent,″ Dr. Rugalema stated, reflecting the shared vision of both organizations.

In tandem with these efforts, Tanzania’s horticultural crops industry is set for a transformative boost following a successful showcase at the Fruit Logistica trade show in Berlin, Germany.

Led by the Tanzanian Horticultural Association (TAHA), the country’s delegation at the prestigious event garnered attention for its potential in exporting perishables.

TAHA’s pavilion stood out among exhibitors, drawing interest from potential customers eager to explore partnerships with Tanzania’s burgeoning horticultural sector.

Promising leads have already emerged, with the Daily Green Company expressing keen interest in purchasing okra, bitter gourd, and African bird’s eye chili from Tanzanian growers.

Officials from the Daily Green Company visited Arusha to finalize an export deal under the guidance of TAHA, expressing enthusiasm to commence massive exports once logistical details are in place.

″Our customers can’t wait to consume the fresh produce from Tanzania,″ shared Daily Green Company officials.

Mr. Anthony Chamanga, Chief Development Manager of TAHA, led the engagement with the new buyer, expressing gratitude on behalf of the industry.

The initiative represents a pivotal moment in Tanzania’s horticultural sector, with the collaboration set to drive economic growth and expand the country’s footprint in the global market.
