Cyantraniliprole TC registered by a Chinese company first time

On February 18, 2024, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced grant of the 151 pesticide registrations of the third batch of 2024. In this batch of registrations, Hebei Xingbai Agricultural Technology’s cyantraniliprole 90% TC has attracted attention from the industry circle. The registration of this important product was approved on January 24, 2024, with the registration certificate number PD20240002, which is valid until January 23, 2029. This approval signifies that Hebei Xingbai Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd has become the first Chinese local enterprise to obtain the registration of cyantraniliprole technical.

According to the China Pesticide Information Network, up to date, a total of 12 cyantraniliprole product registrations have been granted in China, including 3 technical materials and 9 formulations, most of which are held by the multinational corporation FMC and Syngenta. Among them, the cyantraniliprole technical material registrations are all held by FMC.

Cyantraniliprole was developed by DuPont, which was later acquired by FMC, along with the product cyantraniliprole. As a second-generation ryanodine receptor inhibiting insecticide developed following chlorantraniliprole, cyantraniliprole is systemic, permeative and conductive, fit for application to a large variety of crops including vegetable, corn, sugarcane, grain, fruit tree, cotton, soybean and rice. The crops treated by the product grow healthy and strong, with bright leaves and increased yield. Its compound structure is identical to that of chlorantraniliprole, except the chlorine (Cl) on the benzene ring, which is changed to cyano (CN). Although it is only a change in functional group, cyantraniliprole becomes more efficient with a broader spectrum of activity, which can effectively control lepidoptera, hemiptera and coleoptera insect pests, being very environment friendly. It was granted registration by the U.S.EPA, rated as low-risk pesticide.

Cyantraniliprole Structural Formula

In July 2012, DuPont’s cyantraniliprole was granted registration the first time and launched to market in Argentina in the trade name Benevia for use in tomato, followed by registration in Canada in 2013, in Japan and Brazil in 2014. In the same year, DuPont launched to Indian market the product Benevia, which is the cyantraniliprole OD. Later, it was launched in the United States in 2015, for application to corn hybrid seed. Up to now, cyantraniliprole is registered and used in over 50 countries and regions, including the European Union, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, the United States and Japan. On January 20, 2024, cyantraniliprole came off patent in many countries, to be detailed as follows: 

- PCT (WO2004067528), filed on January 21, 2004; terminated on January 20, 2024.

- EU Patent (EP2264022), filed on January 21, 2004; terminated on January 20, 2024.

- US Patent (US7247647), filed on January 21, 2004; terminated on January 21, 2024.

- Chinese Patent (CN100441576C), filed on January 21, 2004; terminated on January 20, 2024.

Due to its extensive insecticidal spectrum and excellent insecticidal effect, the sales have been increasing year by year. According to open data, the global sales of cyantraniliprole were US$20 million in 2013, which exceeded US$100 million in 2018 to have reached US$105 million. In 2019, its sales further reached US$120. DuPont once anticipated peak annual sales of over US$500 million. As a perfect supplementation to chlorantraniliprole, it is believed that with the patent expiration, the Chinese production capacity and related formulation application of the insecticide will increase rapidly.
