Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has taken action to ensure North Dakota flax producers have a choice of products for preharvest weed control.

"Because growers still have need for preharvest control of Canada thistle and other weeds, I have extended the special local needs (SLN) registration for preharvest use of Touchdown CT on flax to Dec. 31, 2016,” Goehring said. “That registration, issued in 2006, to Syngenta Crop Protection, was slated to expire this year.”

Goehring also issued a new SLN registration to Monsanto Company for its RT 3® herbicide, also for preharvest weed control in flax fields. An earlier SLN registration, issued in 2006, had expired.

"Monsanto has given RT 3 an alternative brand name – RT 3® Powered by Roundup Technology® Herbicide,” he said. “The new SLN registration, which allows use of the alternative brand name, expires Dec. 31, 2016.”

Applicators must follow directions, restrictions, and precautions on the EPA-registered label and the SLN label. They must also have the SLN label in their possession during application.

Goehring said that four glyphosate products are now available for preharvest weed control on flax. They include Touchdown® CT from Syngenta Crop Protection, RT 3 Powered by Roundup Technology Herbicide from Monsanto, Makaze® from Loveland Products and Durango® DMA® from Dow AgroSciences.
