Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) unveiled the BRS FS313 bean cultivar during the Show Rural 2024, which received special coverage from AgroPages this week.

With a potential yield of 3,200 kg/ha, obtained from the average of the five experiments with the highest productivities, BRS FS313 exhibits resistance to anthracnose and root rot and moderate resistance to Fusarium wilt and rust.

The new specialty grain variety featured high productivity and was developed by the Bean Breeding Program at Embrapa's research center in the Brazilian state of Goiás. The lineage was approved in trials related to the common bean cultivar development process, standing out for grain size and uniformity, culinary qualities, and favoring export.

With a semi-early cycle (75 to 84 days), the new cultivar has a semi-erect plant architecture and intermediate resistance to lodging, making it suitable for mechanical harvesting and allowing integration into agroecological systems.

Due to the size of the grains, BRS FS313 could grow in both the national and international markets.

The performance of the new cultivar is recommended for various Brazilian states in the rainy, dry, and winter seasons.

Brazil holds a prominent position globally as one of the largest producers of common beans, a product of great economic and social relevance and an essential source of protein in the Brazilian population's diet.

According to Embrapa, the new cultivar could increase sustainability in agricultural production.

Researchers suggest that this aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Sustainable Agriculture (SDG 2) and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).

Seed production for availability to farmers is being conducted by Embrapa and selected technical cooperation partners.
