Dow AgroSciences has expanded its PhytoGen cottonseed research with a move to a newly acquired 225-acre facility in Leland, Mississippi, US which it purchases from Syngenta Crop Protection. The 225 acre (91 ha) site will be used for cotton seed research by the PhytoGen joint venture between Dow’s Mycogen seed company and cotton seed firm J G Boswell. PhytoGen staff will be operating from the site by the end of June. Dow introduced its genetically modified insect-resistant WideStrike cotton through PhytoGen in 2005. This year, PhytoGen introduced its first early season glyphosate-tolerant Widestrike/Roundup Ready Flex variety. Future product offerings will include resistance to nematodes and seedling diseases and tolerance to plant bugs, Dow says. The Leland facility was opened by the Syngenta forerunner, ICI, for agrochemical research in 1991.
