The Chinese National Bureau of Statistics announced the grain production data in 2023 on December 11.
According to the survey of 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country, China’s total grain sowing area, per-unit output, and total output in 2023 were as follows:
The sown area of grain in the country was 118.969 million hectares, an increase of 636,000 hectares or 0.5% over 2022, among which the sown area of cereals [1] was 99.926 million hectares, an increase of 658,000 hectares or 0.7% over 2022.
The national per-unit grain output was 5,845 kg/ha, an increase of 43.6 kg/ha over 2022, a rise of 0.8%, of which the per-unit yield of cereals was 6,419 kg/ha, an increase of 40.0 kg/ha or 0.6% over 2022.
The country’s total grain output was 695.41 million tons, an increase of 8.88 million tons or 1.3% over 2022, of which the output of cereals was 641.43 million tons, an increase of 8.19 million tons or 1.3% over 2022.

In 2023, China’s grain output reached a new high, which paved the way for China’s rural revitalization and accelerated agricultural development as well as the promotion of the high-quality development initiative. This is a significant contribution towards stabilizing the global grain market and safeguarding the world’s food security.
