Zhongshan Chemical‘s 7,000 t/a propanil TC begins production; Global demand exceeds 10,000 tons

According to AgroPages, Zhejiang Zhongshan Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. (Zhongshan Chemical for short) has recently begun commercial operations at its propanil technical production facility within Inner Mongolia Zhonggao Chemical Co., Ltd. (Zhonggao Chemical for short). 

The facility has a design production capacity of 7,000 tons of propanil annually, potentially promoting Zhongshan Chemical as the largest propanil manufacturer worldwide. 

Propanil, a highly selective contact amide herbicide, is effective against barnyard grass, Leptochloa chinensis, crabgrass, Monochoria vaginalis, Meadow fescue, Oenanthe javanica, and other weeds in rice fields. It can effectively controll grass and broad-leaved weeds, particularly barnyard grass in rice fields.

With the escalating resistance of barnyard grass, the efficiency of conventional pesticides like quinclorac, penoxsulam, cyhalofop-butyl, and metamifop has decreased, leading to increasingly severe yield loss due to uncontrolled weeds. As the only C2 group (HRAC) amide herbicide for rice fields and a PSII photosynthesis inhibitor, propanil can cause weeds to wither and die by destroying their membrane systems and blocking photosynthesis. 

Since propanil does not exhibit cross-resistance with other pesticides, it has seen steady growth in usage. Currently, the global demand for propanil has exceeded 10,000 tons per year, with primary users in the US, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and various African and Central American countries.

India and China are the largest producers of propanil worldwide. Most of the manufacturers generally maintain a yearly production capacity of less than 1,000 tons. Currently, Zhongshan Chemical has obtained domestic registration for 98% propanil technical. It is in the process of registering several formulations in China and other products in key rice-growing countries such as the US, Brazil, Thailand, and Vietnam.
