Argentina changes technical requirements for registration of bioinputs

The National Health and Agri-food Quality Service (Senasa) of Argentina announced changes to the requirements for the registration of biological inputs. The new regulation updates the procedure for registering bioinputs in the categories of Plant Therapy and Fertilizers, Amendments, Substrates, Conditioners, Protectors, and Raw Materials.

According to Senasa, the new regulation applies to those interested in producing, importing, exporting, possessing, fractionating, distributing and selling bioinputs. The categories covered by the new legislation include bioinputs for plant protection, microbial inoculants, and non-microbial biological fertilizers. Resolution number 1004/2023 also covers microbial and non-microbial biological stimulants, microbial and non-microbial biological amendments, biological substrates, and biological protectors and conditioners.

Published by the Argentine government, the decision justified the need to modify, expand and update relevant technical requirements, due to a global trend to replace agrochemicals with bioinputs.

"In Argentina, there are significant advances in the development of bioinputs," the agency explained in the resolution. For this reason, Senasa affirmed that it is essential to promote the use of bioinputs in the integrated management of pests and for plant nutrition in agricultural production. According to government technicians, the objective of the changes is to ensure the protection of the environment and human and animal health, as well as ensure the effectiveness of registered products.
