Sumitomo Chemical announced the launch of the biorational solution Accede (1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid – ACC), a new thinner for apple cultivation in Brazil.

The practice of thinning consists of removing excess fruit to increase the apple fruit’s size, color, and quality.

Accede is a new growth regulator that promotes larger caliber fruits, bringing significant operational gains to the producer.

″With a great tradition in the hormonal management of high-tech crops such as apples, Sumitomo Chemical continues to invest heavily in the segment, offering a complete portfolio of phytoregulators of sustainable origin,″ Eduardo Rossini, manager of Plant Regulators and leader of HF crops, revealed to AgroPages.

Accede is a tool for thinning apples and can be done later when no other product is as effective.

The product can thin fruits up to 25 millimeters in diameter, acting on the smaller, weaker fruits, while those with more significant potential remain on the plant following their development, generating higher quality fruits.

For Cesar Boff, Latin America Marketing Manager for BioRacionais, Accede is an innovative tool.

″For the sector, this is a key tool to optimize the productive potential of orchards, reconciling sustainability with practicality. The new plant growth regulator is safe for cultivation, the environment, and consumers, complying with good fruit production practices in Brazil and around the world,″ Boff reinforced.

The apple tree can produce more than two thousand flowers per plant. That is, it has the initial potential for two thousand fruits; however, it cannot sustain all these fruits with quality until maturity.

Therefore, thinning is common, which must be conducted early so that the remaining fruits can fully develop until harvest. Part of the lower-quality flowers or fruits are discarded, the rest are adjusted with Sumitomo Chemical solutions.

Dr. Poliana Francescatto, global specialist for the development of growth regulators at Valent Biosciences, commented that Accede is more than a new chemical thinner, being effective from flowering to fruits measuring 25 mm in diameter, making it perfect for Brazilian conditions, where decision-making is usually delayed due to weather conditions.

″For this reason, Accede® comes to expand the time window for interventions in this management, and can be considered a rescue thinner, to be used where previous interventions were not completely efficient, reducing or even eliminating manual thinning,″ the specialist stressed.
