On August 2, a field demonstration of application of pyraquinate, which is a novel herbicide created in China under a national key research and development program for control of rice field resistant weeds field, was held in Wuhan, China.

After review of the performance of the product, the expert group unanimously confirm that pyraquinate is a novel herbicide with high efficiency, low toxicity and low residue, as independently created in China, being effective against resistant moleplant seed while being safe for rice. This is a breakthrough into the typical problem of lack of safety which exists on conventional HPPD herbicides when being applied to indica rice. It is an ideal rice field herbicide as a substitute for conventional agents, with its high value in application and original creativity.

Pyraquinate, jointly created by the National Key Laboratory of Green Pesticides of Central China Normal University and Shandong Cynda Chemical Co., Ltd, is a targeted HPPD novel herbicide, being extremely systemic and fast acting. It takes effect only three days after foliar spraying, being ideally effective against moleplant seed during the whole growth period of moleplant seed. This has greatly simplified the process of application of pesticide in the rice field, fit for large-area aerial application.

Pyraquinate is a breakthrough into the worldwide bottleneck where HPPD inhibiting herbicides cannot be applied safely to indica paddy rice; pyraquinate is free of cross-resistance with existing compounds and can be used as a substitute in favor of resistance management; pyraquinate can effectively prevent and control weeds such as the resistant moleplant seed, Leptochloa panicea, young barnyard grass, Eragrostis japonica, lecrsia oryzoides, paspalum distichum and Echinochloa crus-galli.
