TMG (Tropical Melhoramento & Genética), a Brazilian company of genetic solutions for cotton, soybeans, and corn, announced to AgroPages that it was expanding its operations in Latin American countries with the launch of cultivars.

In Paraguay, four new soybean varieties were launched through a cooperation contract with ALAG (América Latina Agrisciences).

Luiz Gustavo Kalinowski.jpegAccording to Luiz Gustavo Kalinowski, cultivar licensing consultant in the company, TMG 2757 IPRO, a variety with Intacta technology that confers resistance to caterpillars and glyphosate, and TMG 1160 RR, an exclusive material for the country, will be made available in the market this year.

For 2024, the launch of cultivars with Intacta technology, TMG 2461 IPRO, and TMG 7362 IPRO are planned. These cultivars also have Inox technology that confers tolerance to Asian soybean rust.

Gustavo explained that these four new varieties are part of a project that has lasted more than ten years. Through partnerships with local companies from different countries, TMG tests cultivars developed with the company's germplasm bank to the needs of local producers and expand its operations to other countries with agriculture similar to Brazil.

″Our objective is always to help the producer to reach a high productive ceiling of his crop with profitability and, as we have a very robust improvement program in Brazil with varieties that are resistant to different climatic conditions, pests, and diseases, we believe that we can take this to other parts of the world,″ he said.

Over time, TMG intends to reposition itself among Paraguay’s four largest soy cultivar companies.

″Throughout our operations, through the partnership with ALAG, we have already sold more than 500,000 bags of soybean cultivars with the TMG brand in the country, and we want to regain the top positions in that country,″ the specialist commented.

Uruguay, Colombia, and Bolivia

″Another country where we are advancing is Uruguay. We have been working with Agronegocios del Plata (ADP) since 2014, and our goal is to deliver a competitive portfolio within three to five years,″ the consultant said.

Through research and testing, the company is promoting an exclusive variety for the country, TMG 2260 IPRO, with Intacta technology resistant to caterpillars and glyphosate.

The variety should be on sale to growers later this year.

″After about four years of tests, we were able to start multiplying the cultivar in this 2022/23 harvest, to sell approximately four thousand bags to the Uruguayan producer,″ he commented.

In Colombia, TMG registered five new soybean varieties, three of which are conventional and two with resistance to glyphosate.

According to Gustavo, they will be ready for sale in the short term. The company has been operating on Bolivian soil since 2013 by sending samples for validation.

″Since it is a market with good potential, however, a little restricted, we depend on approvals for new biotechnology platforms to expand the operation,″ he said in conclusion.
