Syngenta launches herbicide ‘Axial’ in Brazil

Syngenta Crop Protection announced the launch of Axial, a new herbicide for controlling grasses affecting winter cereals, especially ryegrass and oats. The product is formulated from an active ingredient that is unique in Brazil, Pinoxaden, which has a post-emergence action and can be used on wheat and barley crops.
 
Axial is the company’s new option for controlling weeds responsible for considerable reductions in productivity. For example, ryegrass alone can reduce the productivity of an entire wheat crop by up to 30%. The main advantages of Axial are its rapid penetration through the cuticle of weeds, its selectivity to wheat and barley crops, and its high efficiency in controlling oats and ryegrass.
 
Rafael Berta Herbicide Marketing Manager at Syngenta said that the weed situation for winter cereals has become very complex, with the rise in cases of resistance. ″Redgrass and oats are very competitive weeds, appearing in crops every year and often with several emergency incidents making control difficult. Axial will bring a new level of control of grasses, becoming a fundamental ally for the short, medium and long-term control strategies of farmers,″ he said.

 
Used by rural producers based in Europe and other continents, Axial is one of the main novelties of the global leader multinational for Brazil in 2023, being one of the most anticipated technologies by the national cereal sector. For this year, according to the National Supply Company (CONAB), the national wheat harvest should reach 10.5 million tons, an increase of around 10% compared to the previous harvest.
 
"Formulations containing Pinoxaden and under the Axial brand are already sold in several countries, including Spain and Canada, with proven positive results. For Brazil, we expect the same success, to help face farmers the challenges of the coming harvests," he added.
 
Investment in graminicides

Brazil has approximately 3 million hectares allocated to the production of wheat and barley. The main production areas are Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo and Santa Catarina. Currently, the cerrado region has been witnessing a trend towards a rise in the area planted with both crops.
 
According to a survey carried out by Syngenta, around 61% of national wheat and barley farmers apply post-emergent graminicides to their crops. However, the evolution of weed resistance is one of the main challenges facing winter cereal producers.

"Weed control is fundamental, and this novelty will support farmers not only in increasing productivity, but also in terms of quality for future harvests,″ Berta said in conclusion.
