China - Drafted by Harworld and others, the γ-aminobutyric acid industry standard put into effect

The γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) industry standard (QB/T5633.7-2022), jointly drafted by Nanning Harworld Biological Technology Co., LTD (as the vice director), China’s Biological Fermentation Industry Association, National Center of Standards Evaluation, Jilin University, Jiangnan University and other organizations, has been put into effect in China since April 1, 2023. This Standard was previously released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on September 30, 2022.

The standard was proposed by the China National Light Industry Council, and supervised by the National Technical Committee on Food Industry of Standardization Administration (SAC/TC64).

Product classification: According to different application, GABA products are divided into 4 categories: food processing, chemicals used in daily life, cropping and feeding.

GABA is a non-protein amino acid widely present in animals, plants and microorganisms. It is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nerve system with good water solubility and thermal stability. It has been widely used in medical, food, health products, feed, agriculture and others.

For medical applications, GABA can effectively promote blood vessel expansion, lower blood pressure, treat Parkinson's and epilepsy, and prevent diseases such as Alzheimer.

For food and health products, it can inhibit nerves, regulate various metabolic activities of the body, and has the functions of anti-anxiety, calming nerves, and improving sleep;

As a feed additive, it can prevent convulsions, lower blood pressure, enhance brain activity, protect liver and kidney;

In the field of agriculture, GABA, as a clear ion transport regulator, can promote the uptake of key nutrients by plants, and has outstanding effects on maintaining yield and increasing production.
