As a large rice-planting country, 37% of the pesticide market in China was taken by paddy insecticide products. Though Chinese paddy insecticide market was flooded by quality products from the multinationals (AgroNews 2011-06-21), an insecticide mainly produced by Chinese companies was welcomed by growers thanks to its excellent performance against a major rice pest, the plant hopper.

As an insect growth regulator, buprofezin inhibits chitin synthesis of the rice plant hopper. The highly selectiveness, lower applying rate and efficiency made the insecticide a cost-effective competent rival against the patent products introduced by multinationals such as chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide in China rice protection market for the later mainly used in control of stem borer and leaf roller. Large outbreak of rice plant hopper has occurred in China every year since 2005 and 28 million hectares of rice crop was infested by the insect last year. There have been signs that the plague will be serious this year and large outbreaks have took place in some Southeast Asia regions, which made buprofezin a target in pursuit race among Chinese manufacturers.

At present, 24 applicants have granted approvals for the ai by Chinese authorities and their total annual capacity amounted to 8,000 tons while actual output was 4,500 tons. It is forecasted that the demand will be 5,000 this year slightly higher than last year and the manufacturers in China are chasing the insecticide by seeking approvals (AgroNews 2011-07-28) and increasing their production. Major Chinese buprofezin exporters such as Anpon, Jiangsu Jiangu and Jintun Agrochem have successfully sold 75% of their outputs to overseas market.

However, phosphorus, and important material for buprofezin production have been in price hike due to tight supply, which will hold back on the operations for Chinese manufacturers. Currently, the price is 37,000 Yuan per ton for the ai and 12,000 Yuan per ton for the 25% WP, 10% increasing than last year.
