Best Agrolife Limited Receives Patent For In-House Developed Noval Sugarcane Herbicidal Combination

Best Agrolife Ltd,  a leading agrochemical company in India, on Friday announced that it has received a patent for an invention entitled SYNERGISTIC HERBICIDAL COMPOSITION OF TRIAZINE AND SULFONYLUREA HERBICIDES WITH PHENOXYACETIC HERBICIDE for the term of 20 years. The new patent is a combination of Ametryn+2,4-D+Halosulfuron methyl used for the control of weeds in sugarcane as pre, early post, and post-emergent herbicide.

″Sugarcane is the most significant crop for Indian agriculture and the economy. Our nation is the world’s largest producer and consumer of sugar as well as the world’s 2nd largest exporter of sugar. Unfortunately, in absence of efficient and safer herbicides, the country suffers a total cane yield loss of around 25 million tonnes per annum (equivalent to 2.5 million tonnes of sugar) valued at around INR 1500 crores. Hence there is an urgent market demand for more sustainable herbicides that can control even the worst weeds at all stages″ said Vimal Alawadhi, the Managing Director of Best Agrolife Ltd (BAL).

″Conventional herbicides could control the weeds at certain growth stages targeting only the leaf part of weeds and not the root.  In addition, the unsolved issues such as residue, volatility, and quick resume growth of weeds have also been a long-existing headache to sugarcane growers. With this new patent, we will be able to provide a more effective, efficient, and sustainable solution for all the above weeds-related problems to sugarcane growers,″ he added further.  

Halosulfuron-methyl is a sulfonylurea herbicide that can be absorbed by leaves and transferred to the underground part thus it can not only kill overground leaves but also eradicate underground roots. Ametryn, on the other hand, is a triazine selective systemic herbicide for control of annual grass weeds like crabgrass and green bristle grass and part of broad leaf weeds in  sugarcane fields. The mixture of halosulfuron-methyl and ametryn can kill grass weeds, broad-leaf weeds, and other stubborn weeds in pre, early post, and post-emergent stages ensuring improved yield of sugarcane with high sugar content.
