In 2022, Syngenta Group’s annual sale of microbial fertilizer in China exceeded 500,000 tons, up 72% year on year, enabling Syngenta to hold the microbial fertilizer industry leader position in China.

Microbial fertilizer is a product containing specific living microorganism, which can increase supply of plant nutrients, promote plant growth, increase yield, improve the quality of agricultural products and agricultural ecological environment, to the benefit of an assured food security and protection of soil health. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has classified development of biofertilizer as an important means of making agricultural scientific and technological breakthrough, having advocated that research and promotion of agricultural biological product be supported. At present, there are more than 3,000 microbial fertilizer manufacturers in China, with an annual output of about 30 million tons.

Utilizing China’s national scientific research platform while focusing on microbial agents, Syngenta Group has managed to break through the links of ″biological fertilizer - soil health – nutrition efficiency″ and has formed five product series including agricultural microbial agents, bio-organic fertilizer, bio-compound fertilizer, bio-organic and inorganic fertilizer, microbial soil improvement products.

In recent years, field trials conducted on 18 crops in more than 300 locations in 15 provinces have shown that the microbial fertilizer products developed and promoted by Syngenta can allow achievement of over 7% yield increase versus other nutrient fertilizer products, with an obvious effect of disease resistance, quality improvement and stress resistance. Hence, soil biodiversity is significantly improved, amount of use of fertilizer is decreased, efficiency of fertilizer is increased and carbon emission is reduced, which effectively alleviates the pressure from traditional fertilizers on the environment.
