On June 30, 2011, EPA received the National Marine Fisheries Service's (NMFS') Biological Opinion relating to the potential effects of the pesticides captan, chlorothalonil, 2,4-D, diuron, linuron and triclopyr BEE on federally listed threatened or endangered Pacific salmon and steelhead and their designated critical habitat.
NMFS worked with EPA, the pesticide industry, grower groups, states and other stakeholders to complete this Biological Opinion. NMFS made a number of refinements to the earlier two drafts of the document, and the provisions of the final document are easier to understand and more relevant to pesticide users.
The Biological Opinion provides a one-year timeframe for implementation. EPA will consider the opinion and take appropriate steps to protect threatened and endangered species from pesticide risks.
