The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has published a notice of reconsideration to expand the scope of its review of fipronil, a broad-spectrum insecticide used in agricultural crops and urban situations to control a range of pests, such as cockroaches and termites, and for the control of fleas and ticks in cats and dogs.
This expanded review will allow the APVMA to reassess the potential residues and trade risks related to the use of these products and consider whether labels carry adequate instructions to protect Australia’s trade and the health and safety of people, animals and the environment.
The APVMA is seeking public comment on the matters being considered in the expanded scope, with submissions closing on 18 January 2023.
Fipronil products under review may continue to be used in accordance with the APVMA-approved label directions for the duration of the review.
