Mahanarva fimbriolata causes losses worth US$10 billion in Brazilqrcode

The root leafhopper (Mahanarva fimbriolata) is becoming an increasingly dangerous insect for Brazilian sugarcane plantations, stressed agronomist Homero Moreschi (Trade Marketing Manager for Sugarcane and Pasture at UPL).

The presence of sucking insects, such as the root leafhopper, has increased in sugarcane fields, demanding more attention from Brazilian farmers and causing significant damage.

In 2022, pesticide applications against this pest increased, according to the National Union of Plant Defense Products Industry (Sindiveg).

According to Moreschi, Mahanarva fimbriolata can also cause the rotting and death of sugarcane roots, adding estimates indicate that the pest has the potential to cause loses of up to 80% in crops if it is not treated properly.

Based on data from the National Supply Company (Conab), which estimated the national production of sugarcane in the 2021/2022 harvest at more than 585 million tons, the financial impact of the pest could reach R$48.6 billion, noting that the Basic Value of Sugarcane Production estimated for 2022 is R$95 billion.

″These numbers highlight the urgent need to effectively combat Mahanarva fimbriolata. Acetamiprid and bifenthrin are molecules developed and by science and their their efficacy have already proven, contributing to the decimation of the spittlebug. Together, they represent the best insect control strategy, with prolonged action and protection of cane fields,″ Moreschi said.

″Acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid, is celebrating 50 years of excellent results in the field. This active ingredient acts directly on the leafhopper's nervous system, as does bifenthrin. The combination of these insecticidal functions improves control of the pest, causing its death and minimizing its negative effects on sugarcane,″ he added.

″This union of active ingredients stops damage immediately. With this management option, it is possible to increase sugarcane production safely and sustainably, benefiting production,″ Moreschi said in conclusion.
