Products based on the herbicide active ingredient 2,4-D have been a consistent and dependable tool for farmers around the world for decades, and now the demand for the product is increasing in the USA and other markets. In response, Albaugh has initiated a project to substantially increase the in-house production of the active ingredient over the next few years.
Today, the company is producing 2,4-D in a large-scale, backwards-integrated plant in Argentina. Under the new project, Albaugh will utilize this very competitive know-how and site infrastructure to substantially increase the production of key intermediates such as chlorine, caustic soda and monochloroacetic acid based on commodity raw materials in Argentina. The final products for the market in USA will be produced at the company’s North America manufacturing facility in Saint Joseph, MO utilizing the existing large-scale capacities for both ester and amine formulations of 2,4-D.
The project will be initiated this year. When completed, the total investment in Argentina and the USA will exceed $50 million. The in-house production of 2,4-D today is supplemented with 2,4-D active ingredient purchased from other manufacturers. The company will continue and expand these partnerships to satisfy the total global demand for Albaugh 2,4-D products.
