On July 16th, the new Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 – the Fertilising Products Regulation (FPR) – officially opens the European market for recycled and organic materials for fertilising purposes and most importantly, biostimulants. While biostimulants were previously considered part of Plant Protection Products, this new regulation recognizes the proven potential for biostimulants to also support the growth and yield of crops by creating a clear functional delineation between this category and those specifically for plant protection.

For the first time, all EU member states will share the same official definition of agricultural biostimulants, representing a major breakthrough for every company operating in the industry.

We enhance the hard work and collaboration of the European Biostimulants Industry Council (EBIC), of which Tradecorp is a founding member, who came together with the common goal of including plant biostimulants into the regulation despite a challenging political landscape.

Tradecorp International views this as a great step forward in sustainable agriculture and the transformation of the agricultural sector, as well as an important milestone for Europe to be at the forefront of the industry, acting as a reference for the rest of the world in terms of  agricultural regulation. According to EBIC, most market analysts report that the European biostimulants market accounts for roughly half of the global market, driven by a desire for efficiency, consumer demand for products with reduced environmental impact, and the ability for biostimulants to target specific agronomic needs, among others.

″At Tradecorp, we support the new EU Fertilising Products Regulation because we are determined to take an active role in leading the transformation of the industry and enhancing the circular economy and sustainable agriculture, aligned with the goals of the Common Agricultural Policy, the EU Green Deal, and the Farm to Fork Strategy″, stated José Alfredo García, Chief Operating Officer, Bionutrition at Rovensa. ″We are committed to all our stakeholders by promoting greater use of recycled materials and reducing waste and dependence on imported nutrients, and this new regulation is helping us in this regard″.

Tradecorp has successfully operated in Europe since its founding in Spain in 1985. In the years since, the company has provided growers with high-quality and efficient products to ensure their success and optimize their yield. With this new regulation, Tradecorp will be able to share their innovative products throughout Europe more quickly and to more markets where, under the previous regulations, biostimulants were not permitted. FPR also ensures the safety and quality of all products on the market, as new products must comply with environmental and safety requirements. This will afford growers greater reassurance and peace of mind that the biostimulants they are using are effective and safe to use on their crops.

By promoting innovation in the industry, together we can address the challenges our world faces today and in the future. As a leader in biostimulation and a member of the EBIC (European Biostimulants Industry Council), Tradecorp is pleased with the implementation of the regulation and is optimistic that it will help the biostimulant industry to flourish in the coming years, benefitting us all.
