SWAL Corporation to launch Viola (Flupyrimin) for paddy BPH across India

SWAL Corporation Ltd. has announced that it would launch Viola® 10% SC across India containing the patented active ingredient Flupyrimin.

The product targets one of the most damaging paddy pests brown plant hopper (BPH). The company plans to launch the product in the current Kharif cropping season across various key paddy crop locations.

The launch in Haryana was done in Karnal, in the presence of 300+ trade partners and farmers. Farmer Shishpal Singh, from Dadupur, Karnal shared his experience of total BPH control with improved yield and reduced applications. He affirmed that Viola helped him resolve BPH issue in a sustainable way for the gathered audience of trade partners and farmers.

With the introduction of Viola, growers can experience assured protection during the most critical growth stages of their rice crop. The product is ready to reach out to millions of growers across the 44 million hectares of rice grown in India.

Viola is a novel insecticide with unique biological properties and long residual control. Its suspension formulation provides quick and effective control against Brown Plant Hopper (BPH). Extensive demonstration trials have shown that Viola protects rice yields from the damage of BPH and boosts crop health, further supporting farmers’ economic resilience and productivity. The product is also effective on pest populations resistant to existing insecticides.

Mike Frank, President and COO at UPL, said: “Flupyrimin is a breakthrough technology promising a leap forward in pest management for rice growers. With market access maximised through SWAL’s widespread retail network and differentiated branding strategy, the introduction of Viola in India marks another fundamental milestone of our collaboration with MMAG under our OpenAg® vision.”

Ashish Dobhal, UPL Region Head for India, said: “India is the world’s second largest producer of rice and the largest exporter of this staple crop. Growers here have been waiting for a one-shot effective solution to protect against BPH. Through Viola, SWAL is delivering top-of-the-industry control for BPH.”

Pankaj Joshi, Business Head – SWAL, said: “With the addition of Viola, SWAL will be able to bolster its solution based approach for farmers and tackle the most notorious pests in paddy, which is a very important crop for the country. It will further strengthen our position as the go to source for cutting edge farm solutions in India.”

Flupyrimin was discovered through a collaboration between MMAG and the Prof. Kagabu group. It was first registered in Japan in 2019.
