More than 94,500 tons of glufosinate capacity in China to be launched or under construction in two years

The penetration rate of herbicide-resistant GM crops has been increasing in major growing countries, making herbicide the absolute leading pesticide category. 

In recent years, glufosinate has been the fastest-growing non-selective herbicide. However, in the long run (five or seven years later), with the penetration of new-generation GMOs, prohibition of paraquat and the increased use of mixtures, the global application of glufosinate is expected to further increase from 45,000 tons in 2021 to roughly 100,000 tons.

Manufacturers of glufosinate technical include BASF, Lier Chemical, UPL, Shandong Yisheng, Yonon, Veyong and Shijiazhuang Ruikai. Due to the pandemic since 2020, the cost increase and the force majeure event, the supply of glufosinate has become very unstable.

The table below is a list of China’s glufosinate technical projects to be launched or under construction in two years, which reveals that more than 94,500 tons of glufosinate capacity and 88,500 tons of L-glufosinate capacity will be or are already under construction.
