The summer crop acreages in India are growing aggressively across all crops. The recent figures released by the Indian Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare on Friday reported 69.76 lakh hectare.

Summer crop in India has various limitations such as short sowing window, assured irrigation required with season specific varieties. Despite limitations for cultivation in summer, the increased acreages are encouraging.

The government is promoting “Targeting Rice Fallow Areas (TRFA)” program for 15 States to promote Pulses & Oilseeds in summer.

Acreages of pulses have shown a growth of 40% with an acreage of 19.15 lakh hectare in comparison to 13.65 lakh hectare of last year. Black gram has shown an increase in area of more than 50% compared to last year where as green gram has shown an increase of 37%. The top three states to report high area coverage are Madhya Pradesh (8.24 lakh ha), Odisha (2.61 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (1.95 lakh ha) followed by other states with marginal acreages.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) is monitoring live water storage of 140 water reservoirs of the country on weekly basis. The water commission’s report accessed by Krishak Jagat suggested that India is in a better overall storage position compared to corresponding week of last year. The condition is also better than the average storage of last 10 years during corresponding period. As of 28th April 2022, the live storage stands at 63.31 billion cubic meter which is 108% of last year’s storage and 128% of average of last 10 years.
