CBDA 2022 - Crisis in inputs should not stop evolution of agriculture

Renato Buranello, President of the Brazilian Institute of Agribusiness Law (IBDA), highlighted the uncertainties regarding the supply of inputs at the opening of the Brazilian Congress of Agribusiness Law.

Buranello said that the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) triad contributes to seeking efficiency, and better results, concerning environmental protection standards, and gains for the community, aiming to consolidate a Low Carbon Economy in Agriculture.

In his speech, the president of the IBDA also highlighted that the understanding of the geopolitical importance of Brazil in the production of food, fibers, and bioenergy and the relationship with the institutions and constituted powers will remove the asymmetry of information in the effectiveness of an adequate legal regime of agribusiness.

Subsequently, the former Minister of Agriculture of Brazil, Roberto Rodrigues, coordinator of FGV Agro, reinforced the importance of having peace in the debate of ideas and the balance of behavior in the area of law. He said that legal certainty is essential to guarantee the return on investments.

For the Minister of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), João Otávio de Noronha, very little is done when there is no legal certainty. “Investment requires predictability, and sustainability gives us a vision of the future and longevity,” he said at the event covered by AgroPages in Brazil.

“Agriculture as a business requires planning, investment, predictability, and commitment. Agriculture is the lifeline of the economy and has guaranteed the development of our country,” he added. He also commented on the importance of continuing to create guarantee instruments to be used in a less bureaucratic way.

The Minister of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), Ricardo Villa Bôas Cueva, pointed out environmental issues as challenges for agribusiness since the United States must include a new rule that may affect investments made in the country, which will need to have a complete and broad disclosure of environmental impacts.

Another challenge mentioned was the focus on effective competition and encouraging the participation of new market entrants in technological innovation, which can have a direct practical impact on how production chains are organized.

Former Minister of Infrastructure Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas listed the actions taken by the ministry to improve the transport and logistics infrastructure in the country, benefiting the flow and movement of the national harvest. There were 84 successful auctions with more than R$ 100 billion contracted. In his view, the world is experiencing a transition from a brown economy to a green economy. Those democratic countries, with a healthy business environment, will receive the investments and be able to enter the new global chains.
