Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide begins mass production of its novel compound Cycloxaprid

On 18th March, 2022, Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide Co., Ltd. held a launching ceremony in Shanghai to mark the start of mass production of its self-developed novel compound, Cycloxaprid (Wenlong®).

Cycloxaprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide developed jointly by the East China University of Science and Technology and Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide Co., Ltd. The product can be used for controlling insect pests, such as rice planthoppers. Since the second half of 2011, Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide Co., Ltd. has cooperated with the East China University of Science and Technology in jointly developing the novel pesticide, Cycloxaprid, having established an R&D center focusing on creation of the novel pesticide. From 16th to 19th March, 2016, the research program, titled, the “Industrialization of the Created Cycloxaprid,” undertaken by Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide Co., Ltd. passed the expert evaluation and acceptance process conducted by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. 

In August 2018, Shanghai Shengnong Pesticide was granted full registration of Cycloxaprid technical and Cycloxaprid 25% WP for application on paddy rice, to control planthopper and cabbage aphid. Meanwhile, the OD formulation was developed. During field trials, both Cycloxaprid WP and Cycloxaprid OD were used. 

Cycloxaprid has a broad insecticidal spectrum with excellent insecticidal activity against rice planthoppers (brown planthopper, sogatella furcifera and small brown planthopper). Cycloxaprid’s cross-resistance is extremely low, being highly active against thiamethoxam-resistant B biotype Bemisia tabaci, imidacloprid-resistant brown planthopper, imidacloprid-resistant B and Q biotype Bemisia tabaci. Cycloxaprid’s unique action mode is based on its neonicotinoid insecticide that offers antagonistic action on CHRN, the first of the kind. Cycloxaprid is non-toxic to honeybees, and no bees have been found to have died due to the use Cycloxaprid, nor does it affect flight intensity, colony potential and brood comb development.

The market release of Wenlong® offers the market an excellent product for controlling piercing-sucking mouthparts, which will play a major role in grain harvest and agricultural production.
